Table Tennis
In the Faroe Islands we are excited to finally welcome our table tennis friends back to the islands for the Island Games.
Competition Format
If participant numbers allow, the tournament will begin with group stages where the top two players – and possibly the best third-placed players – advance to a knockout round.
The team competition will follow a format with two main groups. The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals. This format follows IIGA competition rules, Article 6, Section 2.
Venue
The competition will be held at Hoyvíkshøllin in Hoyvík, Tórshavn – a full-sized indoor sports hall with good spectator capacity and a variety of facilities, including a café and fitness room.
In addition to the match tables warm-up tables will be set up in a smaller gym space that is part of the same complex.
Useful Information
Matches will be played with white, three-star balls from a specified brand to be announced later.
Table Tennis in the Faroe Islands
Table tennis first gained a foothold in the Faroe Islands in the 1940s, but it wasn’t until 1980 that the Faroese Table Tennis Federation was formally established.
Even before that Faroese table tennis had achieved international membership – making it one of the first Faroese sports to do so.
The national programme has been active ever since, and both senior and youth national teams – for men and women – regularly compete internationally. Today, there are around 60 active table tennis players in the Faroe Islands, mainly in the clubs Tór in Tórshavn and TBF in Suðuroy.
The Faroe Islands have taken part in table tennis at every edition of the Island Games. So far, they have won a total of two gold, five silver, and eleven bronze medals.
