Judo
The Japanese martial art, which is also an Olympic and Paralympic sport, was first included in the Island Games when they were held in the Faroe Islands in 1989. Judo is one of the less regularly featured sports at the Games. This will be the eighth time the athletes have the opportunity to compete in judo at the Island Games.
Competition Format
The judo competition will take place over two or three days, depending on the number of participants.
Each island or island group may enter a maximum of two athletes per weight category:
Women: u48 kg, u52 kg, u57 kg, u63 kg, u70 kg, u78 kg, and +78 kg
Men: u60 kg, u66 kg, u73 kg, u81 kg, u90 kg, u100 kg, and +100 kg
According to Island Games regulations individual weight categories must have entries from at least four different islands and a minimum of six competitors in order to proceed. Categories with exactly six competitors will be run as a round-robin competition. Categories with more than six competitors will be run as elimination brackets with repechage.
In the team event each island may enter one men’s team and one women’s team. Teams must consist of four to seven athletes representing different weight categories. The final format of the team competition will be decided later in consultation with the participating islands.
Venue
The judo competition will take place in Tórshavn. The final venue will be confirmed in due course.
Useful Information
Weigh-in will take place the day before the competition.
The event will be judged according to the International Judo Federation (IJF) rules in effect at the time of the competition.
All athletes must bring both a white and a blue gi that complies with IJF regulations. Gi checks will be conducted during the event. The required back patches will be provided by the organisers prior to the Games.
Judo in the Faroe Islands
The first judo club in the Faroe Islands, Havnar Judofelag, was founded in 1971. Today, there are five active clubs with judo being practised on most of the larger islands. Faroese judokas compete internationally under the Faroese flag in Nordic, European, and global competitions.
The Faroese Judo Federation was founded in 1981.
The international judo journey began in earnest with the 1989 Island Games, and the Faroe Islands have taken part in all seven editions of the sport to date. Over the years, Faroese judokas have achieved a total of 19 gold, 21 silver, and 25 bronze medals.
