Gymnastics
Gymnastics is not always part of the Island Games, but it will be included in the 2027 Games in the Faroe Islands.
Competition Format
Women will compete in four apparatus: floor, vault, beam and uneven bars.
Men will compete in six apparatus: floor, vault, parallel bars, rings, high bar and pommel horse.
In the compulsory routines and team event all gymnasts perform the same routines based on specified requirements for each apparatus. The team competition takes place in the same round, and medals will be awarded for both individual and team results.
The competition will follow FIG regulations. The all-around results from all apparatus are used to determine the overall winner of the FIG competition.
In the FIG finals gymnasts compete in individual apparatus finals with medals awarded to the best performer in each event.
The competition days will be structured as follows:
Saturday: Open training
Sunday: Training day
Monday: Set and team competition
Tuesday: Day off, open training
Wednesday: Training day
Thursday: All-around competition and apparatus qualification
Friday: Apparatus finals
The gymnastics competitions for both women and men will be held at Bylgjan in Runavík.
Useful Information
To ensure all equipment meets FIG standards all apparatus used will be either new or recently certified by Gymnova. This guarantees top-quality equipment for both women’s and men’s competitions.
Gymnastics in the Faroe Islands
Apparatus gymnastics has been a competitive sport in the Faroe Islands since 1966, when two clubs were active. Before that only internal club competitions were held.
The Faroese Gymnastics Federation (Føroya Fimleikasamband) was established in 1980. Participation has steadily grown, and today there are eight gymnastics clubs with a total of 3,400 registered gymnasts.
When gymnastics is included in the Island Games the Faroe Islands usually participate with both a women’s and a men’s team. Faroese gymnasts have also delivered strong results in these competitions.
