Football
Football will play a significant role at the Betri International Island Games in the Faroe Islands in 2027.
The football tournament will be organised as a nationwide competition with matches played at multiple venues across the islands. This approach aims to showcase the Faroese football environment in all its variety and to bring life and excitement to local communities.
Competition Format
The tournament will feature group stages followed by finals.
The number of groups and the exact competition format will not be finalised until the full list of participating teams is confirmed. However it has already been decided that the Faroe Islands will host a maximum of 16 men's teams and 16 women's teams, in accordance with IIGA regulations.
Venues
Around 10–12 football pitches across the Faroe Islands are expected to be used during the Games. These venues are spread across several islands and towns offering a unique opportunity to showcase football in different Faroese settings.
Football in the Faroe Islands
Football is the largest sport in the Faroe Islands. It has been played here since the late 19th century. The first sports club TB was founded in 1892.
The first national championship was held in 1942, and since the 1950s the domestic league has followed a home-and-away format.
In the 1980s significant improvements were made to playing facilities, particularly with the introduction of artificial turf pitches. The Faroe Islands also became members of the international football federation FIFA and the European federation UEFA. A landmark moment came on 12 September 1990, when the Faroe Islands beat Austria 1–0 in their first-ever European qualifier.
Today both the senior national teams and youth national teams for men and women compete in international qualifiers, and Faroese clubs participate annually in European competitions.
