Basketball

Basketball has been part of the Island Games since 1999, with competitions for both men and women. The Faroe Islands have competed in basketball since 2015.

Competition Format

Basketball games at the Island Games are typically played from Monday to Friday, and the same schedule is expected in the Faroe Islands.

Venue

The basketball tournament will take place at Við Tjarnir – the newest and most advanced sports hall in the Faroe Islands. Two games can be played simultaneously at the venue.

The hall offers excellent facilities for changing, warm-up and meals. There are also laundry facilities available for players’ kit.

Useful Information

All teams will be provided with warm-up balls, and all equipment used in the tournament is FIBA-approved.

Transport to and from the venue will be available by bus. Media personnel will have access to all necessary facilities. All basketball matches will be livestreamed.

Basketball in the Faroe Islands

Basketball is a relatively new sport in the Faroe Islands. The first club was founded in 1996. After the Faroe Islands made their debut in basketball at the 2015 Island Games in Jersey three additional clubs were established. That appearance also marked the Faroe Islands' first ever participation in an international basketball competition.

Since then, the Faroese men’s team has competed regularly at the Island Games, and in 2023 the Faroese women’s team participated for the first time – at the Games in Guernsey.
