BOGASKJOTING 1

Archery

Archery began to take hold in the Faroe Islands in connection with the 1989 Island Games, and today nearly 40 years later Faroese archers are finally back on home ground at the Games.

Competition Format

There will be 1440 and 720 rounds for individual competitors for both men and women in recurve and compound categories. Team events will also take place in both bow types. Additionally knockout matches will be held in both recurve and compound.

Venue

The archery competition at the 2027 Betri International Island Games will take place on the football pitch in Miðvágur, on the island of Vágoy. All necessary facilities are available around the venue.

The shooting range will be set up on artificial turf, and it is expected that 30–35 targets will be installed.

Archery in the Faroe Islands

The 1989 Island Games in the Faroe Islands directly led to the establishment of archery as an organised sport in the country. The first club Tambar in Tórshavn was founded the year before in 1988. Since then, three more clubs have been established, bringing the total of Faroese archery clubs to four.

Faroese archers have also achieved solid results at the Island Games and in international competitions earning numerous medals for both men and women.

For many years Faroese archery was not represented independently, as the clubs were members of the Danish Archery Federation. In 1997 the Faroe Islands’ application for membership in the international archery federation FITA was approved.

Around the same time archery and shooting sports joined forces under the Shooting Association of the Faroe Islands with each sport having its own subdivision. In 2010 the two disciplines established separate federations and archery is now governed by the Faroese Archery Federation (BSKF).

The Faroe Islands have also made their mark in judging. Schandorff Vang was appointed an international judge in 1996 and has officiated at many international events. In 2010, his daughter Annika Vang followed in his footsteps, passing the exam to become an international youth judge.
