Island Games in the Faroe Islands in 2027

22.12.2023

The Faroe Islands will host the Island Games in 2027. Originally, the Faroe Islands were scheduled to be hosts in 2031, but after Ynys Môn withdrew for specific reasons, the Faroe Islands were offered to host the Island Games in 2027. And the Faroese Confederation of Sports (ÍSF) immediately seized the opportunity

The Faroe Islands hosted the Island Games in 1989. Now, almost forty years later, it will happen again. There will be 24 participating nations and approximately 3,000 athletes who will come to the Faroe Islands to compete. ÍSF and the government are convinced that we are ready to host the Island Games in 2027. The first preparations will begin early in the new year.

Aksel V. Johannesen, the Prime Minister, is delighted:

"I am very pleased that the Faroe Islands have the opportunity to organize the Island Games in 2027. With more than 3,000 athletes, in addition to support staff and spectators, the Island Games are by far the largest single sporting event in the Faroe Islands. Hosting the Island Games is primarily of great importance sportingly, but also for our tourism industry and for the Faroe Islands as a country."

Elin Heðinsdóttir Joensen, President of ÍSF, is excited:

"This feels like a dream come true. We have been ready to organize the Island Games for several years. Therefore, it has been a long wait until 2031, when the Island Games were supposed to return to the Faroe Islands. We are ready and feel great support from the Faroese society. Together, we will show that the Island Games 2027 are in safe hands."

Jörgen Pettersson, Chairman of the International Island Games Association, is grateful that the Faroe Islands have agreed to host in 2027. In a comment, he says:

"The Faroe Islands have shown responsibility and taken one for the team, now that one of the member islands faced a challenge that could not be resolved. This is the essence of the Island Games family. We are united in victories as well as challenges."
