Games Equipment Arrives in the Faroe Islands

30.10.2025

Excitement is building as the Faroe Islands welcome the shipment of Games equipment from Orkney — another big step on the road to the Betri International Island Games 2027.

The cargo includes boxes filled with the flags of all 24 competing islands, together with flagpoles and the distinctive medal cushions used at each Games. These items travel from host to host and are reused every time, carrying with them memories and stories from previous Island Games.

When the Faroe Islands’ turn as host comes to an end in 2027, the equipment will continue its journey — this time to the Isle of Man, where the next Games will take place in 2029.

A Sporting Chance for Peace

Among the items arriving in the Faroes was a very special piece — the sculpture A Sporting Chance for Peace by artist Donald Brown.

The artwork beautifully captures the spirit of sport and the shared values of the Island Games community: respect, discipline, humility, and fairness. Each figure in the sculpture tells its own story — the hurdler symbolises the obstacles we all face in life, the wheelchair athlete reminds us of the power to turn challenges into strengths, and the tennis player represents the courage to make a decision even when in doubt.

Together, these figures express a universal message of peace, perseverance, and hope — a reminder of how sport can unite people across borders and generations.

A Gift with a Powerful Message

The International Island Games Association (IIGA) received the sculpture as a gift during the 2023 Games in Guernsey. It later travelled to Orkney for the 2025 Games and now makes its way to the Faroe Islands — the third host to receive this remarkable artwork.

On YouTube, there is a video in which Donald Brown himself talks about the artwork.

With its strong message of peace and friendship, A Sporting Chance for Peace will stand as a symbol of the Island Games spirit — one of unity, respect, and shared purpose among the islands of the world.

Betri International Island Games would like to thank Smyril Line for their excellent cooperation in transporting the cargo from Kirkwall in Orkney to the Faroe Islands.
