Western Isles
Western Isles or Outer Hebrides are a long chain of islands off the west coast of Scotland – the longest island group in the British Isles. The islands are part of Scotland, with Stornoway as the largest town.
The 15 inhabited islands form a self-governing council area, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, which has officially used Gaelic names since 1998 – in both Gaelic and English contexts.
Tourism, fishing, agriculture, aquaculture, and weaving are key industries. Ferries connect the islands to each other and to the Scottish mainland.
The Outer Hebrides have a rich cultural heritage rooted in both Gaelic and Norse traditions. Scottish Gaelic is still widely spoken, and music, sport, and religion play a significant role in local life.
