St Helena
Saint Helena is a remote island in the South Atlantic Ocean and part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. It lies approximately 1,874 km off the west coast of Africa and is one of the most isolated inhabited islands in the world.
An airport opened in 2017, making it possible to fly to the island, which had previously only been accessible by sea. However, flights are often affected by challenging wind conditions.
The island’s economy is based on coffee exports, tourism, fishing, and the production and sale of liqueurs.
Saint Helena has its own Legislative Council and is self-governing in domestic affairs, while the UK is responsible for defence and foreign policy. The capital is Jamestown, and English is the official language.
