Gotland

Gotland

Gotland is the largest island in Sweden, and includes the nearby islands of Fårö and Gotska Sandön to the north, as well as the Karlso Islands (Lilla and Stora Karlsö) to the west. The capital is Visby. Gotland is a fully integrated part of Sweden, without any form of special autonomy.

The island group is a very popular holiday destination for mainland Swedes, and the population increases significantly during the summer months. In winter, Gotland is usually surrounded by ice-free waters and experiences mild weather.

The island’s main sources of income include agriculture, food production, tourism, IT services, design, and some heavy industry, such as cement manufacturing, based on locally quarried limestone. Strategically located in the middle of the Baltic Sea, Gotland also plays a significant military role and is home to the Gotland Regiment, which was re-established in 2018.

The official language is Swedish.
