Alderney

Alderney

Alderney is the northernmost of the inhabited Channel Islands and is part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. It is the Channel Island closest to both France and the United Kingdom.

The main town is Saint Anne, historically known as La Ville ("The Town"). Visitors and newcomers tend to refer to it as Saint Anne, while locals usually call it La Ville.

Alderney has its own legislative government, and it also sends two representatives to the government of Guernsey. The government is composed of a President, directly elected every four years, and ten elected States Members, half of whom are elected every two years for four-year terms.

The entire island forms a single constituency and has full autonomy in all legislative matters, except for foreign affairs and defence. However, there are formal agreements between the governments of Alderney and Guernsey, known as "transferred services". These cover areas such as policing, customs and excise, airports, healthcare, education, social services, childcare, and adoption.
