Åland

The first Parliament of Åland convened on 9 June 1922, and this date is now celebrated as Åland’s National Day. The people of Åland have their own government, budget, parliament, and the right to legislate in areas such as education, healthcare, trade and industry, municipal administration, and transport.

Åland offers education at university level. The education system in Åland is similar to that of Finland and the other Nordic countries and the official language of instruction is Swedish.

Mariehamn is the capital of Åland and is home to both the government and the parliament. It is an important summer destination for international tourism, with around 1.5 million visitors each year.

Approximately 82% of the population have Swedish as their mother tongue.
