Island Games

Since 1985, the Island Games have brought together young athletes from small island communities around the world to compete in a celebration of sport, culture, and friendship.

Held every two years, the Games see over 2,000 competitors from islands across the North Atlantic, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and beyond take part in more than a dozen sports — from football and swimming to shooting and cycling. The event gives islanders the rare chance to compete internationally while representing their own community.

The first Games were held on the Isle of Man with 700 athletes from 15 islands. Since then, the event has grown significantly and in 2027 we expect the number of athletes to be approximately 2.500.

Many world-class athletes, including Olympic competitors like Mark Cavendish, Kelly Sotherton, Mattias Sunneborn, Cydonie Mothersille and Pál Joensen began their journey at the Island Games. But more than medals, the Games are about pride, opportunity, and connection — a chance for islanders to come together, inspire one another, and share the unique spirit that defines island life.
