Betri International Island Games
In November 2023, the International Island Games Association (IIGA) approached the Faroese Confederation of Sports and Olympic Committee (ÍSF) to explore the possibility of the Faroe Islands hosting the Island Games in 2027.
Originally, the Faroe Islands were scheduled to host in 2031. However, when Ynys Môn withdrew as host for 2027, the IIGA was left without a host island for that year.
ÍSF immediately accepted the invitation, and on 22 December 2023, it was officially announced that the Faroe Islands would host the Island Games in 2027.
Preparations Begin
In early 2024, preparations for the Games began in earnest.
The IIGA conducted a site visit in April, a Games Director was appointed in May, and in September, both the logo and visual identity of the Games were launched – along with the announcement of six financial partners and the official name of the Games:
Betri International Island Games XXI
or in Faroese: Betri Oyggjaleikir
Betri is the title sponsor of the Games. The other official partners are Atlantic Airways, Bakkafrost, SMS, MBM, and Smyril Line.
With these partnerships in place, along with funding from the Faroese Government, the financial foundation for the Betri Island Games was secured in September 2024, allowing preparations to move forward with stability and confidence.
